BREAD AHEAD DOUGHNUTS BOROUGH MARKET LONDON

I LOVE a doughnut!  There aren’t many cakes and bakes that I don’t like but I do LOVE a doughnut!  I started following Bread Ahead bakery on Instagram and was always drooling over the pictures of their doughnuts and had contemplated doing a course at the bakery but instead I decided to head to Borough Market to taste them for myself.

The stall is near the entrance by the Borough Market tube exit and was piled high with breads, cakes and speciality breads like topped focacias.  There were a few doughnut flavours out including lemon, classic vanilla, hazelnut and almond praline, chocolate and creme caramel and salted honeycomb.  At £2.50 each they were the same price as standard cupcake in any shop and were a decent size.

I decided that after making the trip it would be rude to not to buy a selection to try out so I bought a classic vanilla, a velvet chocolate and a creme caramel and salted honeycomb.  I also bought a sourdough to have for lunch.

After enjoying a few slices of the sourdough with cold meats and cheeses for lunch we dived straight into the doughnuts.  Splitting the velvet chocolate in half straight through the middle we were welcomed by the generously filled centre.  Unlike lots of doughnuts where it’s pot luck whether you get any filling with the dough part but these were oozing full of filling.  The chocolate filling was a creamy custard with a rich chocolate flavour and the doughnut was soft and dough like the way a proper doughnut should be.  Great Start!

We then moved onto the classic vanilla.  Speckled with vanilla pod the filling was like a thick rich creme patisserie with a hint of creme anglaise feel to it.  It was absolutely delicious and was beating the chocolate for first place.

Finally the creme caramel and salted honeycomb.  The honeycomb has melted on the way home so that was a shame but the inside was again very rich and creamy with a sweet caramel taste.  Personally I was happy with just the half of this one (the ones I could have eaten more than one in a sitting!) but it was delicious all the same!

Sooooooo after waiting for long I’m so pleased that the doughnuts lived up to expectations, I would definitely recommend making a trip to the market just for these!
