At the beginning of the year I decided that I needed to do more outside of work. For anyone who has a business or a busy job or even kids sometimes you find that you don’t do things for you and your life revolves around just one thing! For me, working from home seems to take over my life and so this year I’m doing more things for me. For me to have fun and learn new things outside of the four walls of my home!
I follow the beautiful and amazing West Elm shop on Instagram and saw that they were running a workshop on Valentine’s day. As I mentioned in my Hawker House post, we’re not a Valentine’s household so it was a great way to spend the day.
The workshop was held in the Market area at West Elm on Tottenham Court Road and organised by the wonderful Phillipa Stanton of 5ftinf. I arrived and had a cup of coffee and felt like everyone knew each other but then figured out that they all just follow each other on Instagram so were virtual friends! There were beautiful flowers and tables set up with each person getting their own little goodie box with a heart from Holly Bell and beautiful apron by Emma from Sew Recycled.
The box had a huge amount of things in it, gold scissors, a packet of Pastiglie Leone sweets, personalised pencil, a 5ftinf card and a notebook plus lots of other lovely bits and pieces.
Philippa gave us a quick intro and we had the materials to make a heart wreath, button hole and a fascinator. She gave us some great ideas and there were so many beautiful flowers, herbs, twigs, wires and filler flowers to create our own masterpieces.
We were told that less is more, something I tell my students all the time, so that was always in mind. Every time I wanted to add something extra I thought ‘do I need that?’. She also told us to view out viewfinder on our camera / phone to make sure what you’re making looks good as it’s easier to get a feel for it and although it seems strange it really did work!
The workshop lasted two hours but was so relaxed it felt like I had been there all day and I met some lovely ladies too. After the session I had a wander around the actual shop and had to drag myself out – amazing finds and you could seriously do some damage to your bank account buying cushions, trinkets and stuff for the home. If you’ve never been I’d definitely recommend it and make sure you follow Phillipa on Instagram too!
My finished wreath, fascinator and button hole!
